The very first SLO 100s used Philips 6L6GC power tubes
and GE 12AX7 preamp tubes. We switched to Chinese 12AX7s almost immediately when they
became available. They sounded good and were usually not very microphonic. However the
Chinese tubes became unavailable several years ago, so we looked around at the various 12AX7s
that were available, and decided that the Sovtek 12AX7LP and 12AX7LPS tubes sounded the best.
We've been using them ever since. The Chinese tubes are now available again, but I think the
Sovteks do sound better. The 12AX7LP and LPS sound the same, with the LPS being slightly less
noisy. The only thing I must warn you about is that the 12AX7LPS can not handle very high
cathode voltages, such as that which exists in the phase inverter, and tone and effects loop drivers,
of the SLO - so you must use the 12AX7LP in those positions. I recommend that you use a
12AX7LPS only in the "first" position (the tube closest to the input jack) and the 12AX7LP in the
others. That's what the tube line up is in all new SLO 100s, and it sounds great!
My favorite power tubes, which we have been using for many years, are the Sovtek 5881s - I like
them a lot. They sound good and they're very rugged and reliable. They are also probably the most
consistent, in terms of performance and quality, of any tube I've used. We also offer the new
Groove Tubes KT66 as an option for players wanting more "aggressive" attack from their amp.
They've proven to be very good tubes as well. If you chose to run the KT66s, you would definitely
have to rebias the amp, as they require a higher bias voltage."
