..the pitfall of most post-PI-MVs is the feedback loop around the power amp. The splitter is the PA front-end, comparing the feedback signal from the speaker output to the input signal from the preamp. If the signal level is reduced going into the output tubes, the splitter will try to bring it back to the level that makes the feedback signal look like the input reference. In doing this, the splitter gain looks like it is increasing, but is not. The feedback loop is slowly decoupling as the open-loop gain is accessed.
